This first episode of Only in Staten discusses a common and important issue especially within the borough of Staten Island: opioid withdrawal. One of SIUH’s EM residents, Dr. Batsheva Sholomson begins by discussing symptoms of and medical options to treat these patients. She continues to review dosing and routes of these medications, as well as other symptomatic treatments we can offer our opioid withdrawal patients. Lastly, Dr. Nima Majlesi, toxicologist at SIUH, gives the listeners his thoughts on Buprenorphine and discusses a protocol he started in the ED at SIUH. The topic is particularly important on Staten Island, and especially now in 2023, as you no longer need to be x-waivered to prescribe Suboxone. That’s right, as of January 1st any attending with a DEA can prescribe Buprenorphine!
