Quito, the metropolitan capital of Ecuador, sits high in the foothills of the Andes Mountains and is located in the north of the country. Ecuador, located in northwestern South America, borders on Colombia, Peru, and the Pacific Ocean.
Since 1990, there has been a marked improvement in Quito’s health care and standard of living. However, there are significant inequalities in wealth and well-being. Indigenous peoples are 4.5 times more likely to live in poverty than non-indigenous peoples with reduced access to employment, schooling and health care. Main burdens of disease include maternal and neonatal diseases, chronic diseases and mental health.
